What Does Dental Insurance Cover?
Learning the ins and outs of your dental insurance plan is essential for
planning your family’s expected dental work
Having dental insurance is great, but knowing what your plan does and doesn’t cover (and how much it does) is crucial. Most standard PPO and HMO dental insurance plans cover: Preventative Care - dental cleanings and exams; Basic Treatments - dental fillings, root canals, tooth extractions; Major Treatments - dental crowns, bridges, and certain oral surgeries. These treatments are often part of a "100-80-50" plan, where 100% of preventative treatments are covered, 80% of basic procedures, and 50% of major procedures.
Full coverage dental insurance plans may also cover basic orthodontic treatment like braces or expanders but not Invisalign. While dental implant insurance is sometimes included, it often doesn’t cover more than the metal implant post and not the abutment or crown. Cosmetic dentistry is never covered by insurance because it is an optional treatment, not medically required. If you have any questions about your specific plans coverage, we can help. Reach out to our Tustin dental office at (714) 795-3865 to schedule a financial consultation today.
Alternative Financing Options
Our dentists want to make sure you never have to stress about the cost of
your dental care with our Tustin office’s financing options
We understand at Gold Coast Dental Tustin that dental insurance plans can’t always cover everything you and your family need throughout the year. However, we don’t want you to put off your necessary treatments because of your provider. Our Tustin office also offers and accepts alternative dental financing options to ensure you can always afford the high-quality dental work you deserve. Each of our office’s alternative financing options work with your insurance, picking up what even the best plans don’t and allowing you to pay them back in small, convenient installments:

Care Credit Dental
Care Credit Dental offers a dental care credit card that makes paying for the treatments you need easy. Just like a typical credit card, you can charge anywhere from $1 to your credit line limit to cover what your insurance doesn’t. With low minimum monthly payments, it’s easy to meet your deadlines.

LendingClub
LendingClub allows you to repay your treatment bills with their flexible dental loans. Their repayment plans are extremely flexible, with payment periods as short as 6 or 12 months and as long as 72 or 84 months.

Denefits
Denefits offers dental loans for patients regardless of their credit score or history. Just like us, they follow a philosophy that everyone should have access to the dental care they need without finances or budgets as an obstacle.

PPO vs HMO Dental Insurance
We’re in-network with a number of dental PPO and HMO plans to
be flexible to our patients’ insurance policies
At Gold Coast Dental Tustin, we accept all PPO and most HMO dental insurance plans to allow our patients the best chance to receive the coverage they need. But what does this mean when choosing a policy that fits all of your family’s needs? Here’s a quick rundown of each. PPO insurance is extremely flexible to the demands of your daily life, allowing you to receive coverage without the need for a primary dentist or referrals. Even if you can’t see a dentist in your network, you can
still receive some level of coverage. This adaptability comes at the cost of deductibles and higher premiums. Benefits of dental PPO: no declared primary care dentist, flexibility to see out-of-network dentists, and no referrals needed. Unlike PPO insurance, HMOs require you to have a primary care dentist for your dental treatments. This means that you have to see them for referrals if you want to see a specialist. They also cannot cover
your costs at a dentist who is not in your provider’s network, which can make dental emergencies during vacations a struggle. However, what you lose in freedom, you make up for in lower costs. Benefits of dental HMO: lower monthly premiums, fewer out-of-pocket fees, and no or low deductibles. Need help deciding which insurance plan is right for you? What do I do if I don't have dental insurance?
If your employer doesn’t offer dental insurance, you can always purchase a dental PPO or HMO plan for yourself and your family from one of our accepted providers. For help choosing the best dental insurance plan for you, our dentists can help you with a financial consultation and ensure that we’re in network with the policy you choose. For non-insurance financial assistance, you can also check out our office’s alternative financing options.
-
How much is dental insurance?
Your dental insurance cost depends on the type of plan and the provider you choose. HMO insurance is less expensive than PPO because of lower monthly premiums and few to no deductibles. Full coverage dental insurance costs more than a standard plan because they offer a wider range of treatments, though these treatments are not fully covered.
-
How do I know if my dentist is in network?
Most insurance providers include a dentist directory on their websites, allowing you to locate your dentist in their network or find one who is based on your location. However, these directories aren’t always the most up-to-date. For the most accurate answer for whether we’re in your provider’s network, please give our office a call at (714) 795-3865.

What should I look for when getting dental insurance?
When looking into buying a dental insurance plan, it’s important that you take your entire family’s expected treatments for the year into account. For example, if you plan to get braces, then you’ll want to get a full coverage plan that includes orthodontic treatments. You should also look into all of the costs that are involved and whether or not we’re in-network with that plan. While PPO plans allow us to be out-of-network for you to still receive coverage, that’s not the case with HMO insurance. If you need help finding the best plan for you, feel free to schedule a financial consultation at our Tustin dental office for assistance.
-
Is dental insurance worth it in retirement?
With time, our teeth age and become more vulnerable to cavities and tooth decay. You may need cavity treatments, dental extractions, dentures, implants, and more. Dental insurance for seniors can be worth it if you expect to need more than standard dental cleanings every 6 months.
-
What treatments does dental insurance not cover?
Dental insurance typically does not cover cosmetic dentistry, braces, Invisalign, or dental implants. Some full coverage plans, which have a wider range of treatment coverage, may include braces or the metal post of a dental implant. They usually don’t cover Invisalign or the implant’s crown.
